I Joined the Nihon Review: The Most Complex April Fool’s Joke of All Time

Everything, everything was for this.
Everything, everything was for this.

I joined The Nihon Review and I’ll be writing for them now under the alias Kenyaboi1364, from here on out. Later guys, it’s been pretty real!

But really now.

Jokes aside, I actually did join The Nihon Review as a reviewer, and I’m very excited to be working alongside my new colleagues in such a highly esteemed, professional environment. It’s a bit surreal to start writing for The Nihon Review as well, especially since the site was my first genuine foray into the anime blogging community. But more importantly, The Nihon Review (alongside Gaguri’s Ha Neul Seom) was really the first site to actually challenge me to set critical standards and delve deeper into the anime that I watch.  It’s a transcendent experience to have been approached and invited to apply by one of your biggest influences. Though I can claim to be no seer, if I hadn’t stumbled across Shadowmage’s Baccano! review all those years ago, I doubt I would be writing about or enjoying anime as much as I do now. Plus, I’d probably still love Shuffle!, and seriously, fuck that show.

Expect to see me contributing to the already extensive anime review section, and occasionally, the staff blog Behind the Nihon Review for staff-wide posts, should the opportunity present itself. My two greatest goals are to write reviews about lesser-known series, good or bad, which get far less attention than the more popular stuff and to eventually flood the review section with some awesomely girly shoujo shit or josei anime along the lines of Kaleido Star, KareKano, and Honey and Clover.  I’m a huge dork for those types of shows in general, so I’m very excited to be critiquing and writing reviews on the girliest of girl cartoons.

And don’t worry about my recent lack of activity or if writing for The Nihon Review will affect activity on Pretense with Glasses. I wouldn’t accept a position if it meant choosing between two projects, and I’m just about ready to return to a more regular, weekly blogging schedule like before. January was a bit of a roller coaster in my life and in February through early March I was just lazy and probably drunk 50% of the time, but I’m just about back in full force. Pretense with Glasses isn’t going anywhere.

Finally, I’ve been meaning to do some maintenance around Pretense with Glasses, from changing out the banner to rewriting that horrid About section. I’m planning to make the site more organized, streamlined, and readable, as the spacing with this WordPress theme is fairly awry, so I may even switch to a completely new aesthetic. This is a work in progress and I hope you’ll stick around for any of my new posts, which should be coming out a far more regular (and likely even faster) rate from here on out. And because why not, here is a shameless plug to show you that I’m not dying off at all.

  1. and to eventually flood the review section with some awesomely girly shoujo shit or josei anime along the lines of Kaleido Star, KareKano, and Honey and Clover

I’m looking forward to this way more than I’d like to admit. All of my expectations.

But yeah, it’s good to see you up and at it again. Best of luck with your new-found balancing act (and don’t get too drunk if/when you end up writing a Kaleido Star review).

    1. I’ll always just gone with the flow when it comes to writing and updating the blog, but I got dialed back about 5 weeks thanks to some hectic things going on in January. As for now, I’m just about ready to go back into full gear.

As for Kaleido Star, ohohoho, we’ll see!

  2. Congratulations Click! It’s a shame you didn’t join before they reviewed SAO and Guilty Crown, but I’m sure you’ll prove to be a valuable and excellent addition to the family.

    1. I would love to avoid writing about Sword Art Online as much a possible in 2013, because there’s nothing else which can possibly be said about that show which hasn’t already been said (for better or for worse). As for Guilty Crown, possible 30,000 word masterpost (or colloquia if I can find someone).

      1. I actually wouldn’t mind joining you on that colloquia. Guilty Crown is prime “Tribute From a Hater” material and I’ve been meaning to find ways to spice that project up after the disappointment that was the Rahxehphon TBH.

Now it's your turn.
